Who Uses Search Engines?

In a study entitled "Into the Mind of the Searcher," Enquiro, a British Columbia, Canada-based SEM firm, divided search engine users into four categories, based on how they search and their basic demographics. For example, 25% are "Step Scanners," a group that scans the top listings to see if anything catches their attention, and if not, does a more deliberate scan through the page. This group is 100% male and has the highest average income.

The largest segment, at nearly 42%, is composed of "Deliberate Researchers." These people read through all the listings on the first page and take the most time before clicking on a link. In addition, nearly 21% more users, labeled "Searchers," go through all the search results in order.
